Our Coastal Height Limit Is Under Attack

Two City Councilmembers Want Voters To Recind The 30-foot Coastal Height Limit

Council members Jen Campbell and Chris Cate want the City Council to put a measure on the November ballot to rescind the 30-foot coastal height limit in an area north of downtown, west of I-5— for the Midway, Pacific Highway and Sports Arena communities.  The city approved an increase of 11,000 new homes in 2018 for these areas.

I believe that this would be a monumental mistake, especially because of the removal of the requirement to provide parking spaces for new development in TPAs (Transit Priority Areas).

In 2019, Senator Skinner authored SB 330, which would have put the mechanism in our housing codes that would’ve allowed the City Council to suspend the coastal height limit in the name of the “Housing Crisis.”
